True Transformation in the New Year

February 1, 2023

It’s that time of year when the words “goals” and “new year resolutions” seem to appear on every blog and sneak their way into every conversation. Changes are made to schedules, habits, diets, and routines. Often these changes initially have good intentions, though as time goes on, motivation is lost and those changes become harder to maintain. After the excitement of a new year, many find themselves sinking back into their “old habits” once again.

The truth is, the flip of a calendar doesn’t change us. But as Christians, we possess something that does. Hebrews 4:12 says,For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” God’s Word is powerful and able to transform us.

In the midst of the many practical, physical, and personal changes people are striving to make in this season, do not forget to put a finger on the pulse of the most important part of you – your faith. In the end, if we don’t put Christ first and build our life habits upon His Word, they will crumble and fall to the ground. It doesn’t matter what other changes we seek to make in our lives if we do not know God and live for Him alone.

Here are some good reevaluation questions to consider asking yourself in this season: How will you prioritize time in Scripture amidst the busyness life brings? What habits in Scripture memorization could you change? If we don’t feed our spirit the life-giving truths from God’s Word, we will starve. How are you feeding yourself spiritually on a daily basis? What routines could you establish to better help you achieve that purpose? To put it simply, what schedules, habits, diets, and routines will you change up to grow in the likeness of Jesus Christ through God’s Word?

We are called to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness first, trusting that the rest will be added (Matt. 6:33). For us, to live is Christ and to die is gain (Phil. 1:21). Are our lives reflecting this God-given purpose?

Scripture is the best aid for the believer seeking to live a life that is pleasing to Christ. Additionally, unlike our personal goals and lack of motivation at times, God’s Word never changes and will benefit us and equip us in every season without fail. The result it produces is guaranteed to last. This year, seek Christ first. Go to Him in prayer and ask Him how you can bring Him the most glory this year. Focus on what will last for eternity, and be diligent to implant His Word in your heart. No other habit made or goal attained can amount to the treasure that is gained through knowing God through His Word! You won’t regret it.
