Hi Anabel! Welcome to the National Bible Bee Blog! We would love to hear about your NBB journey. How did you first start participating in the National Bible Bee?

Thank you so much for having me! My family first heard about the National Bible Bee through some friends from AWANA, and we decided to try it out. We got connected with our local host group and, bit by bit, learned how to study and memorize God’s Word in a deeper way.

When my siblings first qualified for Nationals, we honestly weren’t sure how anyone could memorize that many verses! But after attending for the first time, we were so encouraged by the community and the example of other contestants. Now, I always encourage those who were in our shoes before — unsure, maybe a little overwhelmed — to just take it step by step, verse by verse.

What do you wish you had known as a first-time NBB participant or competitor?

First, remember what you’re studying and how precious it is — keeping that perspective brings so much more joy and motivation! Second, reach out for help and find a good study community. If you have siblings, study with them. If not, find a Bible Bee friend or two to recite with. It helps so much! Third, take your verses with you — to church, to the grocery store, anywhere! Recite them to friends, your grandparents, your church community. It will be both a blessing to you and to whoever listens.

Can you share a favorite moment you’ve experienced while studying for NBB or attending the National Bible Bee Competition?

Some of my most treasured memories are backstage during semifinals and finals, praying with fellow contestants. In those moments, we weren’t thinking about placement or pressure — we were just seeking the Lord together, and relying on Him. Those times of prayer in the midst of a big stage and bright lights are something I’ll always treasure.

With the many verses you have memorized over the years, do you happen to have a favorite Bible verse?

It’s hard to choose just one! I’ve found that different verses speak to me and encourage me in different seasons. Right now, Psalm 112:7 has been an anchor. It says,  “He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.” In times of uncertainty, it reminds me where my security comes from.

Before you go, is there one thing you’ve taken away/learned from competing in the National Bible Bee Competition that you would like to share with everyone?

More than anything, Bible Bee taught me that God’s Word is the anchor of my life. No matter what changes — school, friendships, plans — His Word remains a constant guide. It gives clarity in confusion, hope in darkness, and joy in every season!
