What does ‘Prince of Peace’ mean?

December 10, 2025

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Our God is a God of Peace, who through His Son brought a heavenly kind of peace into this earth, greater than any peace that we may seek from the world. We see our Savior’s divine role as a bringer of peace first in the Old Testament. As Isaiah famously wrote, some of the many attributes of of our Lord and Savior are:

  • Wonderful Counselor
  • Mighty God
  • Everlasting Father
  • Prince of Peace

Let’s take a deeper look into each of these attributes of God and how we can take comfort in His promises through each of these.

Wonderful Counselor

Our God is ever-present, always there to hear our thoughts and prayers. Through prayer and spending time to grow closer to the Lord, we can seek His perfect wisdom and take comfort in His promises. No problem is too difficult for Him, and He is constant through all. The Lord is great in wisdom and perfect discretion.

“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,” Ephesians 1:17 (ESV)

“This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.” Isaiah 28:29 (ESV)

Mighty God

The Lord cares deeply for us all and offers us wisdom and insight—not only is he mighty in understanding and knowledge, but also in strength and power. There is no thing that is too great for our God to manage. Through His Word and the experiences we face, we can clearly see His power at work.

No mountain is too big for the Lord. Through Scripture, we are reminded that He can handle much, much more than we can.

“Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.” 1 Chronicles 29:12 (ESV)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Whatever burden that is weighing you down, give it to the Lord in faith.

Everlasting Father

He has been our God from the beginning. The Lord never changes and is always present in times of trouble. The Lord is the everlasting God! He does not fade away and He is all-knowing and all-powerful. We can rejoice that we have a God who is always there for us and will never change or alter.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary;

his understanding is unsearchable.” Isaiah 40:28 (ESV)

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Psalm 90:2 (ESV)

“Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.” Isaiah 26:4 (ESV)

Prince of Peace

This season, remember that our God is a God of comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) and hears our prayers. Time spent with the Lord is never lost; may we all seek to grow closer to Him than ever in this holiday season and in the upcoming year ahead. God the Father sent his Son to be our salvation and to overcome the world (John 16:33). He gifts His people with the peace of God, bringing peace with him to this earth, as the angels declared in Luke 2:14 upon His birth, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV

As this year wraps up and a new year draws near, let us remember to keep our eyes on the Lord in whatever experiences we may have. He is good and blesses us with His perfect peace, greater than any peace from the world.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13 (ESV)
