God is awesome. The adjective awesome means to be someone or something that inspires a feeling of both fear and amazement. God commands reverence and respect, and all those who see Him and the acts He does wonder at His greatness. He is an awesome God, and He is deserving of all our praise!
God is described as awesome many times throughout the Bible. One of my favorite verses that shows the awesomeness of our God is Psalm 47:2, “For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.” God is awesome! Think about that for a second. There are so many things we describe as awesome without giving a second thought. But are those things really awesome? No. Going on a big trip is extremely fun and exciting, but it is not something that commands fear and amazement. There are things (such as God’s creation) that are awesome in a small way, but not one thing is awesome to the extent God is. He is unequaled! Moses declares this in Deuteronomy 10:17, when he says, “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.”
Even earthly kings recognize the heavenly King as awesome. “He shall cut off the spirit of princes; He is awesome to the kings of the earth” (Psalm 76:12). The kings see and fear Him, recognizing His incomparable greatness and standing in awe of Him. They fear Him for good reason too, because God is the help of His people. When those who love God are in trouble, they call on His awesome name, and He always hears and answers. Jeremiah 20:11 says, “But the LORD is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper. Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.” Because God is with us to save us, there is no reason to fear those who come against us. He is our awesome Savior! “You shall not be terrified of them; for the LORD your God, the great and awesome God, is among you” (Deuteronomy 7:21).
Our God, the great and awesome God, is deserving of all our praise! Indeed, how can we help but give all our praise to such a great and awe-inspiring heavenly Father? “Let them praise Your great and awesome name— He is holy” (Psalm 99:3). Let us join with the psalmist in praising our awesome God!
