Seth Ross is thirteen years old and has been participating in the National Bible Bee for six years and competing in the National Bible Bee Competition (NBBC) for five of those years “I love studying God’s Word! I also enjoy reading, military history, and playing chess.”
Everyone has something that is their favorite part about the NBB, but Seth can sum it all up in just three words: faith, fun, and friends! “Many resources exist for each of these areas, but the combination of learning so much about God while having fun with likeminded people is something that is unique to the NBB!”
The NBBC is a great time of fellowship with other people who share the same goals. Each year is encouraging and everyone has stories to share afterwards for years to follow. “There are so many great stories each year! One of my favorites was doing simultaneous multi-person midair high fives. After the NBBC 2019 awards ceremony, several of the contestants stood in a geometric form, then each person simultaneously jumped and high-fived the people to their immediate left and right. It took some coordination, but we eventually got a great picture!”
People study in many different ways, but what does studying look like for the NBB look like for Seth? “Along with memorizing, reviewing, and reciting passages, I also study the Discovery Journal, cross references, and the study passage. After the Summer Study, I research and study the background and context of our passages. Our local [host group] prepares group games like Kahoot! and Pictionary, and qualifiers are encouraged to give presentations on the study material. It is also helpful for participants and parents to develop and study Quizlet sets.”
“The National Bible Bee provides experience in many areas, including time management, language, geography, and study methods. However, the most important thing I’ve learned is more than just theology. NBB has helped me to understand the Bible better and to develop a deeper relationship with God.”
If you are considering participating in the NBB, Seth says, “Don’t hesitate … participate! Investing time in God’s Word will bring forth the most enduring returns! Living in His will brings abundant life; God’s Word is fruitful and true. Isaiah 55:11 tells us that the Word of God will not return void, but will accomplish that which it is sent forth to do.”
Whether or not you are participating in the National Bible Bee, spending time in God’s word is worth every minute! Start investing your time today!
