The Attributes of God: Faithfulness

March 2, 2022

The aspect of God’s character, His faithfulness, is evident in all the world around us and can be seen in our lives each and every day. Looking back on how God has been faithful in the past, we can be encouraged knowing that God will continue to be faithful in our current circumstances – for He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Here are 10 passages from Scripture that reflect upon the faithfulness of God, as a reminder for us as we press on in Christ. As A.W. Tozer once said, “True faith rests upon the character of God and asks no further proof than the moral perfections of the One who cannot lie.”

God is faithful to keep His promises. In Hebrews 10:23 we are given this encouragement: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;”

God is faithful to give us grace when we are tempted. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says that “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

God is faithful to forgive sins. This promise is found in 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

God’s faithfulness gives hope. “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lam. 3:21-23)

God is faithful in His work. We read in Psalm 33:4, “For the word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness.”

God is faithful in Himself. Praise God His faithfulness does not depend upon our faithfulness, or lack thereof. “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Tim. 2:13)

God is a faithful high priest. “Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” (Heb. 2:17)

God’s faithfulness is to all generations. Deuteronomy 7:9 tells us to “Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps ]His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;”

God is a faithful Creator. 1 Peter 4:19 says “Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.”

God’s faithfulness knows no limits. The psalmist David wrote in praise to God, “Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” (Ps. 36:5)

As long as we are living here on earth we will never be able to fully grasp who God is. However, when we look at Scripture and meditate on His attributes, we will not only be encouraged in our walk of faith, but more importantly, these truths will allow our worship toward God to increase.

“To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness by night”
